Hmmm what about...?
When Ray started building the Gypsy Rose Bus, we talked about several choices in outfitting her. We both wanted the ability to be off grid, for one. A factor of that was our toilet...
When it came to purchasing a toilet, we knew that Nature’s Head was the way to go. If you’re unfamiliar with how a composting toilet works, I’ll explain. There’s absolutely no water involved. Urine goes in one compartment and solids go in another compartment. Absolutely everyone sits down to pee. When you pee, small holes carry the urine to the compartment that holds it. For us, we dump urine about every two days. For the poo 💩, there is a flap that opens toward the back where you sit down, like literally where the butthole is. In the compartment, you put something that helps to break down the solids into compost. We use coconut coir. We’ve found it to be the most effective. We empty that compartment and clean it about every month and a half. Our non-water closet is behind these lovely doors that Ray built for privacy.
Opposite our non-water closet is our shower. Our shower stall was built using a horse trough. It is sealed and contains a drain for all of the water to empty out. I wanted a deep enough space to bathe our pups, and if I wanted to, I could even take a little bath.
Our water heater doesn't heat much water though so showers are relatively quick. We hand picked all of our tiles that are in our shower, and don't we have a lovely view?
Of course, that view changes wherever we are parked. Ray plans to close in the bottom portion of the window for better insulation and just keep the portion that we can open at the very top.
What about our clothes? Well, he came up with a genius way to keep them too. Just recently he put in a spot where we can hang some clothes. We will be buying a curtain that surrounds them so they are hidden. Other clothing goes in our cubbies above the bed. Our undergarments (ha ha) are in cubbies next to the bed. We both have our separate compartments for our clothing.
As you can tell, living this lifestyle has been a bit of a learning curve. We're still making adjustments so everything has a space. In fact, Ray just finished a box that'll hold our laptop and tablet plus a separate box area to keep his hats. (He has a hat obsession, LOL.)
In my next post, I'll talk about some of the things we've learned along the way and some projects we're still working on. Stay tuned...and...
Peace,
Nikki
